About

History

The Schoodic Lake Association was organized in 1985 by several camp owners lead by Fred Trask.  Their purpose was to raise awareness that the quality of the lake water, health of the fish population and maintenance of water levels were necessary if the condition of the lake were to continue.  At the time, the dam used to control the water level, was owned and operated by Bangor Hydro Electric Company. Their use of the dam was to spill water at strategic times of the year for the generation of electricity in down-river hydro stations.

At this time, Bangor Hydro became interested in divesting themselves of the dam and the Lake Association took possession of the dam and lands immediately surrounding it with the purpose of maintaining water levels that prevented shore erosion, maintained as consistent as possible water levels through the summer and maintained proper water levels in the fall to enhance fish spawning habitats.

As time went on, the activities of the Association included sponsoring the Ice Fishing Derby held each February and working with the Fish & Wildlife Agency to monitor the size, number and health of fish taken and fish-stocking activities.  The Association also worked to educate camp owners regarding improved septic systems and reduced pollution activities around the shores.

More recently, the Association has evolved into an educational organization with the purpose of informing camp owners and lake-users about fertilizer and other run-off pollution, removing structures from the lake and enhanced shore-line vegetation to reduce erosion.  Water quality testing is performed each year to determine water clarity.  Schoodic Lake, today, boasts the second-most clear water of all lakes and ponds in Maine.

These activities and others are performed with the goal to, “Preserve, Enhance and Protect Schoodic Lake and its adjacent areas.”
